Review of IRS Collection Notices

As Tax season gets closer, we thought it might be a good time for a quick refresher on IRS collection notices that you may receive.  Ignoring these notices can quickly escalate into serious enforcement actions, such as liens or levies.  Here are the most common notices to watch for:

·        CP14: Balance Due - the first notice stating your client owes taxes.

·        CP501: Reminder of Balance Due – a follow-up to CP14, reminding the person of unpaid taxes.

·        CP503: Second Reminder of Balance Due – issued when the IRS still hasn’t received payment.

·        CP504: Intent to Levy – a warning that the IRS may seize assets if the balance remains unpaid.

·        L11/Letter 1058: Final Notice of Intent to Levy – immediate action is required to prevent levies.

·        CP90 Intent to Levy and Notice of Right to a Hearing – one of the final steps before enforcement.

·        Letter 3172: Federal Tax Lien Filing – formal notification of a lien placed against a person’s assets.

When a person receives any of these notices, it’s a clear signal that action is needed immediately to avoid escalating penalties, interest, and enforcement.  As a Tax Resolution Specialists, Semenza Accounting & Tax Service PLLC CPA, specializes in providing expert IRS representation and resolution.
